1 Kunming: Unveiling the Marvels
Director: Duan Yi
Duration: 34min
Language: Chinese Subtitles: English
Synopsis: Through the eyes of Kunming’s nomadic observers – particularly the black-headed gulls whose 39-year migration path guides our journey– we rediscover this familiar metropolis — Kunming. Along the Panlong River, elderly anglers and night herons share the waters in silent coexistence. In the rubble of a vanishing urban village, masked palm civets make their final food runs. At new wetland parks, children’s laughter as they feed gulls seamlessly blends with recordings of their parents doing the same decades before.
As the drone camera lifts from the Western Hills’ Dragon Gate, Kunming reveals its astonishing truth: a vibrant mosaic where emerald jewels of nature are intricately set within the steel-and-concrete grid. This is no environmental lecture, but a love letter to modern urban life.

The film is based on the aunt’s daily life and deeply interweaves the challenges she faces in terms of elderly care and rural medical care. At the same time, the act of filming itself quietly reshapes the relationship between the director and her aunt – from an initial observer’s distance to becoming a companion and witness in the midst of hardship.
